On Valentine’s Day (yes, my wife is very understanding), I drove down to the South Coast to South Durras to meet up with Vivian & Thomas for their engagement session.
They both explained that they enjoyed getting away to the South Coast and mentioned that although the weather was usually overcast when they visited, it was still a good place to visit.
Well, Valentine’s Day was no different. With dark threatening clouds already rolling in, and the forecast for afternoon showers, it was either going to bucket down during the session, or we would be lucky and it would hold off till the evening.
It’s one of those things, you can plan all you want, but weather is something you can’t control when picking a date for an engagement session, or your wedding day for that matter. Either way, you should always have a wet weather plan, just in case.
After we chatted about their wedding day and did a run through of the wedding day timeline, it was time to get them both in front of the camera.
Depot Beach was our first location. With hardly anyone there, it was the perfect location to start the session and shake off any nerves they might have had. Next we moved onto Pebbly Beach, which was just down the road. The beach was well protected from the wind, and as a result had a lot more people and wildlife about, including a few kangaroos grazing.
I must admit Vivien & Thomas chose well for their locations. I liked how the thick forest met both beaches, in addition, the various rock formations and the ocean gave us a few backdrops to incorporate into their portrait photos giving a few different looks to their photos.
Even though it drizzled for parts of their session, we were lucky that it was mostly when driving between locations. They weren’t phased by the wet weather and were happy to complete their photo session and enjoy as much of the day as they could. After all, it was Valentine’s Day.
I’m really looking forward to their wedding in Canberra later this year. If their family and friends are anything like them, it’s going to be an awesome day.
For those interested, South Durras is a coastal town located on the South Coast of New South Wales, 15 min north of Batemans Bay. If you’re driving from Canberra, it’s an easy 2 hour drive via the B52 highway, passing through Bungendore and Braidwood.
