If you’re thinking about a portrait session, but have been putting it off then today’s family portrait session taken in south Canberra will convince you otherwise.
To have a successful portrait session, you don’t always have to be in the perfect location or need it to be the perfect time of day.
Sure, it would be ideal to do your photos a couple of hours before sunset, for that warm soft light that gives you nice even skin tones. And who wouldn’t want a location that is unique and resembled something out of a travel magazine?
Well, the reality is if you have a family with young children, their feeding and sleep times will ultimately control the session, dictate the time of day, and in some cases, necessitate the location you can have your portraits taken at.
In today’s family portrait, we had a small window of opportunity, after lunch before the star of the show, was due for a feed and nap.
To keep the environment as comfortable and familiar as possible, we used a section of the grandparents’ front yard, so he could explore and be in familiar surroundings to start off with.
Small children are naturally inquisitive and will forget about the camera quickly once they start to explore their surroundings. This is perfect for natural photos and kids just being themselves.
To get mum, dad and the grandparent in the photos, we moved onto a small patch of parkland next to the house.
As you can see, beautiful natural portraits taken with the correct technique can be photographed in any time of day and in small restricted spaces, such as a front yard or a small patch of parkland.
