I have to admit Autumn weddings in Canberra are pretty special. The Autumn colours: red, orange and yellow add to an already beautiful city. At the beginning of Autumn, I had the pleasure of photographing Vivien & Thomas at their National Arboretum Canberra wedding followed by their reception at The Deck at Regatta Point.
It was a perfect autumn day: blue skies, white fluffy clouds and a comfortable 22 ° C. Combine that with sweeping views of Canberra and you have a memorable day.
Their ceremony was at the Margaret Whitlam Pavilion located on the grounds of the National Arboretum Canberra and officiated by Gina Callan.
The distinctive style of the Margaret Whitlam Pavilion, which resembles one of the sails on the Sydney Opera House, offers an abundance of natural light and panoramic views of Canberra, which made it a perfect location for their wedding.
Vivien & Thomas took out time between the ceremony and reception for bride and groom portraits at the Margaret Whitlam Pavilion, then took a short drive to the highest point of the National Arboretum, Dairy Farmers Hill, which boasts 360° views of Canberra.
Once done with the bridal portraits, it was onto their lunch time reception at The Deck at Regatta Point. The four piece Jazz Band from the Australian National University (ANU), along with canapes and drinks with their guests, set a relaxed and casual tone to the afternoon by Lake Burley Griffin.
Photos from Vivien and Thomas’ Valentine’s Day engagement session down the South Coast were on display at the reception, and friends and family were encouraged to take selfies, paste them in the guest signing book and write messages to the bride and groom.
It’s great to see other people understanding the importance of photography, personalises their message and it encourages the guests to get up from their tables, nicely done Vivien!
To end the reception, the bridal party strolled along Lake Burley Griffin for more photos with the Autumn sunset and national icons in the background, such as the National Library of Australia, the National Portrait Gallery, the National Gallery of Australia and the National Carillon.
A wedding at the National Arboretum Canberra is a must if you are getting married in Canberra during Autumn!
Update: The ABC News interviewed Vivien & Thomas on their story about weddings at the Arboretum. Interesting read to find out why they chose it for their wedding.
